Conference Agenda

This is the general agenda for the Summer National Conference. We’ll fill in the details as the planning committee finishes their work.

12:00 - 1:00

Registration will be open on the second floor lobby outside Inspiration Hall. Meet up with old friends!


Opening Session. Welcome. Housekeeping. Introductions and flash interviews of participants. Introduction of the 2020 Habitat X Fellows. Four-minute previews of Wednesday sessions.

2:30 - 2:50

Break. Snacks and beverages. Re-connect with old friends. 

2:50 - 4:20

Laying the Groundwork.  A focused planning forum guided by the Habitat X faculty. We’ll invite participants to identify the topics that characterize the current state of the home performance industry, and we’ll use this analysis to refine the sessions to follow over the next three days.

4:20- 4:40

Break. Snacks and beverages. Get out and stretch your legs!

4:40 - 5:30

Interviews. Today we’ll seat the 2020 Habitat X Fellows and learn more about their careers and trajectories. We’ll save time for ample Q&A.

5:30 - 6:30

Free Time. Walk 3oo yards across campus to hosted reception.

6:00 - 7:30

Hosted reception at Leigh Lounge in the Strand Union Building. Casual attire. Your families or guests are invited at no additional cost, but please add them to the event when you register.

7:45 - 9:15

No-host dinner at TBD nearby dining venues. 

7:30 - 8:30

Join your fellow Habitat Xers for a full hot breakfast in the second floor lobby outside Inspiration Hall.

8:30 - 10:00

Morning Summary. We summarize work from the previous day, do a quick synthesis of the information, and identify interests and expectations that guide the day’s sessions. The faculty and presenters deliver four-minute previews of the Thursday sessions.

10:00 - 10:20

Break. Snacks and beverages. Take some photos with old friends!

10:20 - 12:00

Strategic Analysis. We perform an industry-by-industry analysis of current opportunities for success and barriers to implementation. The outcome will be talking points and guidance for industry leaders, regulators, and policy-makers.

12:00 - 1:00

Lunch. In the lobby outside Inspiration Hall. Check out the view of the Bridger Mountains!

1:30 - 2:30

Open Space Presentations: we save this slot for topics and presentations by participants. Evaluations show that this crowd-sourced session is often the MOST appreciated session of the conference.

Break. Learn more about your new friends!

2:45 - 4:00

Workshop. Ample time for Q&A.


Break. Beverages and snack. Get refreshed, then settle in for an entertaining interview.

4:15 - 5:00

Interviews. We gather industry luminaries for this interview, with an intent to learn about their best work, their inside views of industry, and their visions of the future. Ample time for Q&A.

5:00 - 5:15

Wrap up and debrief.

5:15 - 6:30

Break. Freshen up if you wish. Travel to the Habitat X House for reception and dinner.

6:30 - 8:30

Hosted reception and dinner at the Habitat X House. This will be a fun and casual opportunity to mingle with other Habitat Xers and enjoy the long Montana evenings. Casual attire. Bring your friends and family at no cost, but do register them so we can plan accordingly.

7:30 - 8:30

Join your fellow Habitat Xers for a full hot breakfast in the second floor lobby outside Inspiration Hall.

8:30 - 9:00

Morning Summary. We review the previous day’s proceedings and fold them into our 2020 Action Plan.


Open Space Presentations. We stage a second round of brief and to-the-point presentations.

10:20 - 12:00

Workshop: Healthy Housing.

12:00 - 1:00

Lunch. In the lobby outside Inspiration Hall.

Workshop: Capturing the Value of High Performance Housing.

2:00- 2:20

Break. Snacks and beverages. Send a postcard back to the office bragging about the mountain views from downtown Bozeman!

2:20 - 4:00

Workshop: Advocacy and Politics.

7:00 - 9:00

Optional no-host dinner and networking opportunity at location TBD..

8:30 - 10:00

Roundtable. We summarize our work and focus our intents in an inclusive planning process. The outcome is actionable guidance for everyone in the room.


Break. Tour the engineering wonders of Norm Asbjornson Hall.


Review the draft Action Plan for 2020. This becomes a working document to which everyone can contribute after the conference. We also lay the groundwork for the next year in the Habitat X networkRoundtable.


Picnic in the Park. We travel to one of Bozeman’s beautiful parks to a nearby park for a farewell picnic and goodbyes to old friends.


If you’re still in town, you’re invited to join us for one of two optional outdoor excursions after the conference.

  • A leisurely stroll through Bozeman’s quaint Southside side neighborhood. Very scenic — we won’t go far but the conversation will be good.
  • A rigorous 3-mile hike up Triple Tree trail. Ultra scenic, with a view of five mountain ranges and a good dose of cardio exercise. Bring your own water.

We’ll plan a no-host dinner for Saturday night.
